Two-tone yellow-and-green colour with a translucent glow

The carver shaped this tiger jade pendant from a single piece of natural Type A jadeite in two colours. At the top, the stone reads bright green. At the base, it shifts to a warm honey-yellow. In between, the two tones meet across the body of the tiger. Through the lighter zones, the jadeite stays translucent. Meanwhile, the deeper green areas show richer colour. As a result, light enters the stone and lifts both colours from within. In jadeite trade, this pairing carries the name “huang jia lü” (黄加绿). However, the same syllables also spell “huang jia lü” (皇家绿), meaning “royal” or “imperial green.” Because of this play on words, collectors treat such two-tone jadeite as a happy and uncommon find.

Carved tiger, lotus, and longevity tree

At the centre of the pendant, the carver placed a detailed tiger’s head. Clear eyes, a strong nose, fine whiskers, and an open mouth show through with clean lines. Below the tiger, a full lotus blossom opens out across the base. Its petals fan forward in clean, layered lines. Above the tiger, the carver worked the deep green section into a longevity tree. Curling branches and clustered foliage frame the scene. Furthermore, the tree links the carving to the rope above. Because jadeite is dense and fine-grained, the carving holds sharp lines throughout. As a result, the tiger’s fur, the lotus petals, and the branches of the tree all read clearly. Together, the three motifs fill the surface of this tiger jade pendant from top to bottom.

Meaning of the tiger, the lotus, and the yellow-green pairing
