Colour and lustre
This white nephrite jade pendant glows with the soft, creamy white tone that defines fine-grade nephrite. The colour stays calm and even across the plaque, showing a milky depth rather than a vivid brightness. At the same time, the surface does not look chalky or dry. Instead, the polished face holds a smooth, waxy lustre that feels almost oily to the eye — a hallmark of well-grained nephrite. The stone shows only a gentle inner glow rather than full transparency, since nephrite carries its colour as a dense, compact body.
Texture and form
Looking closely, you can see fine carving across the rectangular plaque, with smooth, even ground areas around the design. The front shows a coiling dragon weaving through rolling waves, a classic motif which carvers call “dragon splashing water” (蛟龙戏水). The carver shaped the pendant as a traditional pai-zi plaque, with rounded corners and clean edges that frame the scene. As a result, the eye moves naturally across the dragon’s body and the curling water below, while the calm white body of the jade ties the composition together.
Meaning
In Chinese tradition, the dragon (long) stands for power, authority, and the arrival of good fortune. When the dragon meets rolling water, the motif takes on the meaning of “蛟龙戏水” — a dragon commanding the waves, signalling wealth in flow, abundant blessings, and the strength to overcome any challenge. White nephrite itself has long symbolised purity, virtue, and steady, quiet wealth, so the piece sits within the most respected tradition of Chinese jade.
